Michelle Trimble

Weds Jan 21, 2026 - Lecture - Adventures in Improv - Zoom and In Person

Michelle will share her personal journey of discovering the joy and freedom of piecing without a pattern. She’ll walk you through her creative process, from the first hesitant stitches to the bold quilts incorporating swaths of negative space that followed. This lecture is all about exploration, choosing which rules to embrace, and finding fun in the unexpected twists of improv quilting.

Michelle Trimble - Stunning Improv Sunburst

Saturdays Feb 7 & Feb 28, 2026 - 9:30 to 12:30 - Zoom Only Workshop

Members $50.  Open to public on Nov 21 for $60

Working with improv can be wonderfully freeing, yet the outcome can seem overwhelming to the senses. Choosing constraints at the outset of an improv project can not only lower the decision-making burden that can seem overwhelming, it can also ensure your composition finishes with dramatic flair. In this class, you will explore several different variations of improv triangles, and experiment with variables that will alter the look of each variation. You will then incorporate these blocks into a large wedge layout to make a 24" square wall hanging.

NOTE: this is an INTERMEDIATE class.

"A Dialogue Between Quilting and Architecture" Lecture/Trunk Show.

I am a practicing architect, Associate Professor of Architecture and fiber artist whose work has appeared in numerous publications and exhibitions such as "Quilt National", "American Craft Magazine" and "The Quilter’s Quarterly Journal". Since 1998, I have been teaching beginning design to students in architecture at Florida A & M University’s School of Architecture, using some of the design principles found in both quilting and architecture. Both use shape, composition, ordering systems, color, texture and pattern. This lecture focuses on this unusual subject matter – finding common ground between quilting and architecture. It also includes a trunk show showcasing my quilts as well as the work of my architecture students.
